Basic & Pre-clinical Sciences
Investigating fundamental mechanisms of disease, biological pathways, and early-phase translational laboratory models.
Any research question related to human health and medical science is welcome across four reviewer-matching tracks.
Annual Theme & Rubric Weights
Each part of our theme corresponds directly to how reviewers score your 2-page proposal:
Transforming an initial spark into reality requires a methodologically sound bridge. Proposals must demonstrate internal validity, robust controls, and biological, clinical, or technical plausibility.
Minimum to qualify: > 12.0 / 30 (>40%)
Advancing medicine requires questioning established dogma. Submissions must present original, non-derivative inquiries evaluated against current global medical literature.
Minimum to qualify: > 10.0 / 25 (>40%)
A meaningful solution must address an unmet healthcare need. Proposals must define concrete expected outcomes and construct a clear logical bridge connecting those anticipated findings to real-world patient care or health system benefits.
Minimum to qualify: > 14.0 / 35 (>40%)
Logical flow, concise scientific prose, and structural coherence across the 2 pages.
No minimum cutoff (English style never disqualifies strong science)
All proposals across all four tracks compete together in a single unified pool for the Top 10 Finalist places and overall awards. Selecting a track on Page 1 simply pairs your manuscript with two faculty reviewers specialized in your topic and methodology (for interdisciplinary studies, pick the track closest to your primary method).
Investigating fundamental mechanisms of disease, biological pathways, and early-phase translational laboratory models.
